Position Summary:

Play a key role in the development, execution, management and communication of the sustainability strategy. The Manager is responsible to assess, make recommendations and then implement identified projects and to independently carry out administrative tasks essential to the functioning of initiative programs. Primary responsibilities include fostering a culture of sustainability among students and staff; identifying and prioritizing areas for departmental sustainability efforts; planning and development of long and short-range programs in collaboration with other institutional leaders to foster sustainability. The Manager also engages with the academic community in the design of educational programming with a sustainability focus, including the Sustainable Hospitality Program. The incumbent will also be responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of efforts undertaken.

The Manager will work closely with the CSUMB Sustainability Director to ensure the campus’ compliance with annual reporting requirements and other University policies on sustainability; facilitates internal and external communications as the department spokesperson on sustainability issues; participates in and supports the activities of the Campus Sustainability Committee on behalf of A’viands; and represents the department at national professional conferences. The Manager will work in a collaborative manner to develop productive relationships with all variety of campus constituents, and external constituencies, as necessary in order to fulfill the above job responsibilities. Working together this position will support a unified message and direction for campus sustainability.

Specific annual reporting duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Real Food Challenge
  • Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System
  • CalRecycle – State of California Recycling Report

Food Service currently generates a significant amount of waste for the CSUMB campus.  It is critical that every effort be made to support zero waste goals set by the State of California as well as the CSU system.  This may include, eliminating single use plastic, developing re-use programs and training on waste management.

Sustainability at CSUMB goes beyond environmental conservation, is also inclusive of social justice, equity and inclusion.  As such, this position will support efforts to increase food security for students, reduce food waste and support the efforts of the Basic Needs Committee on campus.  As well as partnering with the Otter Cross Cultural Center and the Office of Inclusive Excellence.

Develop manage and lead trainings to support sustainability practices among A’viands employees, including those at auxiliary locations.

Support student learning and engagement by developing student sustainable dining positions.

Support the team with reporting, training, communications and project management.

Key Accountabilities:

 

  • Oversee waste programs including training, reporting and troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate and develop sustainability marketing and communication programs.
  • Establish relationship with sectors stakeholders.
  • Research sustainability industry trends and consumer insights.
  • Develop and implement an integrated marketing plan producing targeted marketing objectives
  • Ensure service areas are maintained with current and well-designed marketing materials.
  • Develop, plan and help implement special events, promotions and activities designed to increase participation at all points of service. 
  • Maintain department within facility specific budget.
  • Attend department head, safety, infection control, quality assurance, and other facility or corporate meetings as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • College degree with major in business administration, public administration, environmental science, engineering or related degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated organizational experience in project development and event management. Experience in research, conceptualize, develop and evaluate projects.
  • Proven ability to develop new projects, preferably within a university setting, understanding of how to institutionalize new sustainability efforts, skilled at problem solving, thinking analytically and developing programs that advance departmental strategic objectives and mission.
  • Experience with training on the topic of sustainability. Proven ability to define program goals & objectives, target campus audience and implement effective education and outreach strategies to expand campus involvement.
  • Knowledge of sustainability theories as well as local, national, and global sustainability initiatives and best practices. Three to five years of practical experience.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, comfort with public speaking, ability to listen and learn and engender trust among various constituencies including faculty, staff, students and parents.
  • Demonstrate strong skills and a track record for sustained measurement of program outcomes, ability to work independently and with and through others to achieved desired results.
  • Proven ability to develop new projects, preferably within an university setting, understanding of how to institutionalize new sustainability efforts, skilled at problem solving, thinking analytically and developing programs that advance departmental strategic objectives and mission.
  • Proven ability to foster collaborations across diverse constituencies in a large institution and inspire confidence and motivate groups to collectively meet common objectives, and strong experience in participatory leadership.
  • Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations and procedures to define the problem or objective, identify relevant concerns or factors and formulate logical and objective conclusions
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze technical content and write communications on those subjects for various audiences Experience for editing for stylistic consistency, logical organization, rational development of content, and ensuring technical accuracy. Knowledge of proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence construction and formatting styles
  • Demonstrated organizational experience in project development and event management. Experience in research, conceptualize, develop and evaluate projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in use of word processing, spreadsheet, and calendaring. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, web authoring tools. Knowledge of database development and/or maintenance.
  • Proven record in creating and measuring successful sustainability and marketing techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills; oral presentation and written communication skills;
  • Understanding of services marketing and the importance of customer service.
  • Ability to effectively work with diverse populations.
